Thank you for the support
It is with a heavy yet prideful heart that the Pink Ribbons Project Board of Directors has determined the time has come for Pink Ribbons Project to end its operations, effective May 31, 2016. At that time, the Board will disburse final funding to deserving organizations in the community, in the hopes that Pink Ribbons Project will leave its mark in the greater Houston area for many years to come.
This decision was not easy, but for an organization that was initially to be only a two-year endeavor,
a twenty-one year run far exceeds initial expectations. During the past two decades, there has been
growing awareness of the importance of breast health, and funding for breast cancer organizations
has increased significantly. In addition to these positive changes, the number of nonprofits devoted to
raising funds for breast cancer organizations and research has multiplied, creating growing
competition. These changes greatly impacted this tough choice for Pink Ribbons Project.
Since its founding, Pink Ribbons Project has raised and granted more than $6 million in funds to
Houston-area organizations that were desperately in need of its financial support. Tour de Pink raised awareness of breast health, brought people of all ages together around a shared cause, and raised vital funding for local entities dedicated to the treatment and awareness of breast cancer. Always remaining true to its inception, the creative element found at every Pink Ribbons Project event set the organization apart from all others and added greater value for all in attendance. The Houston community most definitely will feel the void left by the departure of this stellar breast cancer organization.
“Pink Ribbons Project’s impact in the breast health community could not have been accomplished
without the heartfelt emotional and financial support of our friends and partners in the community.
For this, and so much more, everyone connected with this organization will always be grateful,”
reflects Board member Ann Watkins.
Furthermore, the Board and leadership of Pink Ribbons Project, past and present, hope that each of
you will continue to help everyone in the community access the breast health services they need--
particularly uninsured and underinsured women and men. As Executive Director Kristi Okwuonu
notes, “It will take a concerted commitment from the community to fulfill Pink Ribbons Project’s
mission of staying in motion so that not another soul is lost to breast cancer.”
Thank you for your participation in Tour de Pink over the last eleven years. Every participant, fundraiser, donor and volunteer made an impact on thousands of lives touched by breast cancer. We are grateful for the support over the years and wish you all the very best. - Pink Ribbons Project
