Training Information

Tour de Pink 2010 offers rides for cyclists of all levels!

Survivor and Novice Training Series:  

We invite any and all breast cancer survivors and novice cyclists who plan to participate in Tour de Pink 2010 to this very special Survivor and Novice Training Series hosted by Tour de Pink committee member and breast cancer survivor, Donna Plewa-Allen.  All participants must be registered for Tour de Pink and must provide their own helmet and bicycle.  This is designed so that survivors and novice riders can ride at a pace they feel comfortable and to encourage everyone to participate in this great event!  Registration required at 713.524.7465 or kate@pinkribbons.org 

 

Training Dates:

ALL RIDES WILL BEGIN AT 7:30 A.M.  PLEASE ARRIVE BETWEEN 7:00 - 7:15 A.M.

Saturday, August 14th - "Know and Love Your Bike" @ Rice University parking lot: learn helmet fit, bike fit, proper attire, using your gears, hydration, basic maintenance and then ride the oval all you want!  Bike Barn experts will be at ride to help with all basic equipment needs and questions.   

Saturday, August 21st - "City Roads Can be Friendly" @ the Houston Zoo (meet at the northern most part of parking lot off of Golf Course Drive): 8-10 mile ride through downtown, bike handling skills, safety issues and riding in a group. Seeing the city from a bike gives you a whole new perspective.  

Saturday, August 28th – Out on the Open Roads - @ Royal High School (I-10 West to Brookshire, 1st exit to FM 359, turn right, go to light turn left onto Old US 90, go to 2nd light turn right onto FM 359, go about 2 miles to the school complex on the right): 22 mile ride to Monaville and return, or for those who chose 27 mile option available. bike handling skills, safety issues, riding in a group, riding on highways.  Bike Barn experts will be at the end of the ride to teach us all how to change a flat tire just in case we need to.

Saturday, September 11thHeading towards Tour de Pink – This weeks ride will be in Waller, closer to Prairie View.  From Houston take US-290 West. Exit at Field Store Rd, turn left under freeway.  Go down just past the stadium and turn right onto the side street on the south side of the stadium.  Parking is on the right side near the restroom building.  (Look for the Pink Balloons).  Our final week we'll again be riding on the open roads continuing our bike safety, announcing road hazards, and riding in small groups.  Mileage approximately 16 miles.

Cycling Tips:

A good cyclist is a careful one!  In order to have a safe bike ride, follow these rules as you ride:

  • Wear a helmet. This is mandatory to participate in Tour de Pink 2010
  • Obey all traffic signs and signals.
  • Never wear headphones.
  • Do not use a cellular phone.
  • Ride on the right side of the lane, a few feet from the edge.
  • Ride in the same direction as traffic.
  • Never ride more than two abreast.
  • Pass on the left only.
  • Give hand signals when stopping or turning.
  • Ride friendly and respect the communities that we ride through.
